Reflections of a Translated World: Towards a Disciplinary Meta-Awareness
The graduate students of the School of Translation at Glendon College, York
University, are pleased to announce the fifth annual graduate student conference
in Translation Studies to be held March 8, 2014 at Glendon College in Toronto,
Canada.
Translation as a scholarly practice is marked by transdisciplinarity. Not only
have convergences among languages, cultures, knowledges and fields of study
shaped translation studies, but questions of translation have also contributed
to other fields of enquiry. Whether narrow or broad in scope, research in the
field of translation and interpreting is a unique way of reflecting on the
increasingly translated world in which we live.
This year's conference seeks to investigate translation studies through its
points of contact and reciprocity. An increased
meta-awareness of this inter-relatedness will help us understand the state of
the field, and how it is reflected in our individual research, other areas of
study, and the world at large. Meta-awareness involves taking a step back and
becoming increasingly cognizant of the ways in which translation as a field is
evolving. With these ideas in mind, we welcome papers in various topics related
to translation and interpreting, including—but not limited to—the following:
Knowledge exchanges between translation studies and other disciplines;
The current pulse or trends in translation theory and practice;
The relationship between translation, interpreting, and knowledge and
information flows;
New perspectives in translation pedagogy;
The effect of interdisciplinary research on minority languages;
New specializations in translation studies resulting from changing scholarly and
practice-based realities, e.g. activist translation, translation in the digital
humanities, ideology in translation, translation in the media;
The relationship among translators, the public and other professionals as a
result of field convergences;
Ways in which translators are portrayed or studied (in terms of agency,
subjectivity, embodiment, involvement, etc.);
Current intersections between translation and the study of literature, in areas
such as comparative literature, world literature; and innovative approaches to
literary translation.
These and other related issues will be addressed at this one-day trilingual
event, which will include a series of individual
presentations (20 minutes each) and a panel discussion with scholars from
various universities. Interested persons are invited to submit proposals of
250-300 words in English, French or Spanish by Monday, October 4, 2013 to
conf2014@... . Please ensure that you include the title of your
submission, your name, affiliation and email
address. Selected papers will be considered for publication.
